Level seeks to show this hidden story of water as it sits over 700 feet below the surface celebrating conservation with meditative spectacle. The exact story comes from a well operated by the Department of Natural Resources that monitors the water level of the Wonewoc-Eau Claire Aquifer in Savage Minnesota from 2012 to 2019. The well shows a very familiar story of the seasonal height of aquifers in regions that don’t take water form the Mississippi River. Since there is increase in water used during the summer months to irrigate lawns, the aquifer’s level dips down to be replenished in the winter months.
To tell this hidden story, the Level’s bell shaped fountain shrinks as the level of the aquifer dips and grows in size to celebrate the return of water to the well. Each hour in real time equals a year in the life of the well.
